## What a PVC picket fence actually looks like

Individual vertical pickets with pointed tops, real gaps between them, fixed to horizontal rails that run between capped posts, and white the whole way along, as shown in the photo above. The pickets are separate mouldings rather than a pattern pressed into a flat sheet, so the gaps you see from the footpath are actual openings, not shadow lines printed onto a panel.

That is the short answer to the question most people are really asking before they look any further at [a picket fence in PVC](https://pvcfencinggoldcoast.com/pvc-picket-fence/). The rest of this article covers the details that decide whether it looks right on a particular frontage: how close it gets to timber, how it behaves in the sun, and where the style suits a Gold Coast property.

The low-rise picket style built for a front boundary stands 1200mm high, which is roughly waist height on most people. Each post is finished with a cap. There is no visible fixing hardware running down the face of the pickets, because the rails carry them rather than screws driven through the front.

## Does a PVC picket fence look real?

Plenty of people search for this as a plastic picket fence, which is a fair description of the material and a poor prediction of the result. What makes any fence read as cheap is rarely the material on its own. It is the proportions: pickets too wide for their height, flat faces with no depth to catch a shadow, and posts that look thinner than the fence they are supposed to be holding up.

A PVC picket fence avoids most of that because the parts are shaped like fence parts. The picket has a profile with real depth. The rails sit behind it. The posts are the heaviest element in the run, which is what your eye expects to see. From across a front lawn, the thing that registers is the rhythm of the pickets and the line along the top, and both of those come from the layout rather than from the material.

The one honest difference from timber is the surface. Timber has grain, knots and variation from board to board. PVC has none of that. Standing at arm's length, you can tell. Standing on the footpath, which is where a front fence is actually seen from, most people cannot.

Look at the posts against the pickets, and at the shadow along each picket edge. If you are assessing any picket fence, in any material, five things decide whether it reads as well made:

- Post thickness against picket thickness: the posts should clearly be the heavier element
- Depth on the picket face, so the edges throw a shadow rather than sitting flat
- A consistent top line that follows the ground rather than fighting it
- Gates that match the fence in profile and height instead of being an obvious add-on
- No fixings visible down the front face of the pickets

## Where the picket look suits a Gold Coast frontage

A picket fence is an open fence. It marks the boundary, keeps the yard contained and leaves the garden and the house visible from the street. That is the job it is built for, and it is why the style ends up on front boundaries rather than side and rear ones.

It is not a privacy fence and does not pretend to be. The picket range is essentially the same design as the [semi-privacy range](https://pvcfencinggoldcoast.com/semi-privacy-pvc-fence/), which is why the two look related along a street. The difference is how much gap is left between the vertical elements, and that gap is the entire point of a picket fence rather than a compromise in one.

If the open look appeals but the pointed tops do not, the [Hamptons style](https://pvcfencinggoldcoast.com/hamptons-fencing/) is the closer relative: the same white finish and the same open feel, finished with a flat top line instead of a pointed one.

- Suits a front boundary where you want the house and garden to stay visible
- Suits a garden or internal division inside a larger yard
- Does not suit screening a pool area, a side boundary or a neighbour's window
- Does not suit a property where a colour other than white is required

## What height can a front picket fence be on the Gold Coast?

Height is worth settling before the look is, because it is the one part of a front fence that is not purely a matter of taste.

The City of Gold Coast states that property fencing up to 2.0 metres above original ground level usually does not need building approval. It lists exceptions for corner lots, swimming pool and waterfront fencing, title and contract restrictions, and development approval conditions. The council limits in the middle column of the table below are quoted from its own [residential fencing page, retrieved 7 September 2026](https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Planning-building/Building-applications/Domestic-building-works/Minor-domestic-building-works/Residential-fencing). The right-hand column is this article's own reading of where a 1200mm picket run falls against them, not the council's.

Two of those exceptions land on the height described earlier. A 1200mm picket run is 1.2 metres. Against the general threshold of 2.0 metres it has plenty of room.

The two exceptions behave differently, and the difference matters. Within the corner area of a corner lot, the 1.2 metre run is above the 1.0 metre limit, so it cannot go in at the standard height there. On a waterfront boundary the 1.2 metre run is exactly at the limit, so it fits, with nothing to spare if the ground steps or the design changes.

One caveat on the corner rule, stated plainly rather than guessed at. The council gives the 1.0 metre height but not the size of the area it applies to, referring readers to the Queensland Development Code instead. This article does not name a dimension it cannot verify. Treat these figures as the start of a conversation with the council about your own lot, not a ruling on it, because overlays and title restrictions vary property to property.
